PURPOSE:To efficiently produce high purity 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane, by anodically oxidizing a soln. of 1,4-bis-(dicyanomethylene)-cyclohexane in an electrolytic cell provided with a diaphragm. CONSTITUTION:An electrolytic cell made of stainless steel and lined with PE, PP or the like is divided into anode and cathode chambers with biscuit earthenware, asbestos, an ion exchange membrane or the like as a diaphragm. An electrode of Pt, C, Hg, Pb, PbO, NiO, Ni, stainless steel or the like is placed as the anode in the anode chamber and an electrode of C, stainless steel or the like as the cathode in the cathode chamber. 1,4-Bis-(dicyanomethylene)- cyclohexane is dissolved in a solvent such as ethanol, methanol, acetic acid, benzene or water to 0.05-30wt.% concn. and the resulting soln. is poured into the electrolytic cell. While the soln. is stirred, electric current is supplied to anodically oxidize the soln. By this oxidation, high purity 7,7,8,8- tetracyanoquinodimethane is produced.
