The present invention provides a retractor assembly capable of supporting at least a tissue engaging member (2) in a manner allowing self alignment of the member subject to the pull of force of the tissue engaged by the member, the retractor assembly comprising: (i) a frame member (14) which supports a support member (8); (ii) at least a tissue engaging member (2) which possesses at least a mounting arrangement (10) which is capable of releasably engaging the support member (8); and (iii) a locking member (16) which is capable of releasably engaging the tissue engaging member (2) with the frame member (14) and the support member (8) to hold the tissue engaging member(s) (2) in a substantially immovable position.
