PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To impart an illumination structure enabling image observation in a dark environment without damaging the image quality in a bright environment, to a reflection type display device. SOLUTION: This reflection type display device is composed of a panel 0, a light transmission plate 20, a light source 30 and a polarizing plate 40. The light transmission plate 20 is disposed outside the panel 0 holding the polarizing plate 40 there between. The light source 30 is disposed at the end part of the light transmission plate 20 and generates illumination light as needed. While the light transmission plate 20 normally transmits external light, makes it be incident on the panel 0 through the polarizing plate 40 and emits reflected external light, it transmits the illumination light, makes it incident on the panel 0 through the polarizing plate 40 and emits the reflected illumination light as needed. A 1/4 wavelength plate 9 is interposed at the lower part of the polarizing plate 40 and suppresses the unrequired reflection of the illumination light by cooperating with the polarizing plate 40. Thus, moire can be prevented. |
