Intermetallic bonding of a ferrous metal surface to another metallic surface involves surface graphite removal

Prior to intermetallic bonding of an iron-containing surface to another metallic surface, one or each surface is treated to eliminate graphite. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) an intermetallic bond comprising a graphite-free intermetallic bonding layer between a ferrous metal layer and a non-ferrous metal layer; and (ii) a similar method of producing an intermetallic iron-containing bond in which graphite is removed from the ferrous metal surface down to a depth of /-200 mu m. Preferred Features: The graphite is removed by plating with a transition metal (e.g. chromium), by laser treatment or by electrochemical washing.
