The valve timing control device has a rotor (20) fastened to a camshaft of an engine, and a rotary transmission element (30) mounted around the peripheral surface of the rotor for relative rotation inside a specified range in order to transmit a torque from a crankshaft. A chamber, located between the rotor and the element, has a first and second wall lying opposite one another in the peripheral direction. A vane (60) is provided on the rotor which extends from it in the radial direction outwards into the chamber so as to divide it into an advance and a retard chamber, the vane being movable between the two walls. A locking device (101) locks the rotor and the rotary transmission element together in a specified relative phase when the vane touches neither the first or second wall. One fluid opening (12) supplies and drains fluid to and from the advance chamber, and a second fluid opening (13) supplies and drains fluid to and from the retard chamber. An adjusting device (80) adjusts the relative phase between the rotor and the element.
