PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound, an emulsifier imparted, in the identical molecule, with an 1,3-dioxolane ring readily decomposable under acidic condition and a copolymerizable unsaturated group, good in stability during emulsion polymerization, and useful for improving polymer physical properties. SOLUTION: This emulsifier is a compound of formula I [R1 and R2 are each a 1-20C alkyl or the like; R3 to R5 are each H or propenyl; X is an ionic hydrophilic group; A is a 2-4C (substituted) alkylene; n is 0-100, when n is >=2, (AO)n is a homopolymer composed of one kind of recurring unit of the formula -AO-AO-AO- (A is a substituent) or block polymer or random polymer composed of at least two kinds of recurring units of the formula -(A1O)n1-(A2O)n2-... (A1, A2,... are each a substituent; n1+n2+...=n)], e.g. a compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained by reaction between an 1,3-dioxolane compound of formula III and propenylphenyl glycidyl ether or the like followed by adding an alkylene oxide to the reaction product and introducing an ionic group.
