PURPOSE: An apparatus for providing a reference wavelength of a performance monitoring device of a wavelength division multiplex(WDM) optical transmission system is provided which being constructed easily and cheaply. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for providing a reference wavelength of a performance monitoring device of a WDM optical transmission system includes a light emitting device(406) generating rays of light in a predetermined wavelength band, a filter(408) for receiving the rays of light to filter a predetermined reference wavelength, and a tap coupler(400) for extracting a part of transmission optical data. The apparatus also has a coupler(410) for receiving the output of the tap coupler and the output of the filter to combine them, a sawtooth generator(414) for generating sawtooth wave having a voltage range corresponding to a wavelength range including the reference wavelength and multiple channel wavelengths of the transmission optical data, and a variable optical filter(412) for receiving the output of the coupler and the sawtooth wave to filter the output of the coupler while varying a filtering wavelength according to the voltage magnitude of the sawtooth wave.
