PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject catalyst with excellent performance and reproducibility by compression molding under a specific pressure of catalytic composition powder comprising both phosphorus and molybdenum. SOLUTION: This catalyst which is intended for producing methacrylic acid by oxidation and/or oxidative dehydrogenation of methacrolein, isobutyraldehyde or isobutyric acid in a gas phase with molecular oxygen or a molecular oxygen- contg. gas is obtained by the following process: a suspension is prepared by dispersing a starting material containing both phosphorus and molybdenum in a medium, and then evaporated to dryness into powder, which, in turn, is subjected to compression molding under a pressure of 50-5,000 kg/cm2. The above powder contains matter scattering at pref. 0-40 wt.% at 300 deg.C based on the whole powder, being 150-1,500μm in particle size.
