Image data on an original image for comparison and an objective image to be retrieved is converted into optical images and the optical images are written, side by side, in a spatial optical modulator. The pattern of the written optical images then read out with coherent light, a correlation image is formed by transforming the read out modulation output by means of Fourier transform, and the relative positions of the optical images are altered. The difference is determined between the correlation image before the relative positions are altered and the correlation image formed after the relative position is altered. The correlation value of the objective image to be retrieved to the original image for comparison is determined by integrating the output signal of that difference and compared with a specified threshold value. |
