A method for preventing the sickling of sickle cells in a patient having sickle cell disease, the method which comprises ad- ministering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of a compound having formula (I) wherein X- is selected from the group consisting of iodide, chloride, bromide, hydroxyl, nitrite, phosphate and acetate.
