PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that, in a conventional magnetism detecting element, a sense current is shunted to a part other than the circumference of a nonmagnetic material layer such as the inside of an antiferromagnetic layer or the like. SOLUTION: A specular reflection layer S1 is formed inside a fixed magnetic layer 35, and first insulating layers 39 are formed in both sides of a multilayer film T1 and on a lower-part gap layer 32. The layers 39 are formed in such a way that upper end edges 39a1 of side end faces 39a facing the multilayer film T1 are overlapped with a face S1a on the opposite side of a face facing the nonmagnetic material layer 36 of the layer S1. Consequently, it is possible to prevent the sense current from being shunted to a ferromagnetic material layer 35c1, a nonmagnetic intermediate layer 35b, a first fixed magnetic layer 35a in the fixed magnetic layer 35, an antiferromagnetic layer 34, and a seed layer 33.
