DEVICE AND METHOD OF DETECTING GEAR POSITION IN GEAR BOX OF AUTOMOBILE AND USAGE OF THE DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide device and method of quickly detecting the gear position in a gear box of an automobile with high reliability. SOLUTION: The gear position in the gear box of an automobile is detected by measuring a value representing the speed of a rotating shaft between an engine 11 and the gear box 4 and a value representing the speed of an output shaft 9 from the gear box and calculating the ratio of two speeds. The gear position is determined to be achieved when the ratio is between the upper limit and the lower limit of the value of the ratio related to the gear positions during a predetermined time. The information on the selected split position of split/gear is used for excluding all gear positions which do not correspond to the split position selected as a possible gear position, whereby the upper limit and the lower limit are respectively raised and lowered for the remaining gear position corresponding to the selected split position.
