<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend the life of an optical head by shifting allotment of effective light emitting elements and uniformly distributing the degree of deterioration of the light emitting elements. <P>SOLUTION: In an optical head driving method, a control circuit 22 generates a control signal CTL. A dummy data adding circuit 21 adds dummy data Dd to input image data Din according to the control signal CTL to generate output image data Dout. When the same image is continuously printed and the image data includes a line of a predetermined length along a sheet conveying direction, the control circuit 22 generates the control signal CTL so as to shift the effective light emitting elements by a predetermined number of light emitting elements corresponding to the width of the line.
