The secondary battery includes one or more anodes that include amorphous carbon and a carbon fiber. In some instances, the one or more anodes exclude graphite. The battery also includes one or more cathodes and an electrolyte in contact with the one or more anodes. The electrolyte includes one or more lithium salts in a solvent.

1. A secondary battery, comprising:
one or more anodes that include carbon fiber coated directly on amorphous carbon with the carbon fiber being in contact with the amorphous carbon and fused directly to the amorphous carbon such that a bond between the amorphous carbon and carbon fibers is in accordance with a bond formed by compressing the carbon fiber and amorphous carbon while applying shear stress between the fiber and amorphous carbon; one or more cathodes; and an electrolyte in contact with the one or more anodes, the electrolyte including one or more lithium salts in a solvent.
