PURPOSE:To obtain a device which is thin and compact as the whole through having a large area by laminating a solar battery at least on a part of the surface of a liquid crystal cell. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal device is provided with a liquid crystal cell 6, whose light transmittance is controlled, and solar batteries 7 which are laminated at least on a part of the surface of the liquid crystal cell 6 and are power supply lines for control. That is, a liquid crystal material 5 is held between a transparent substrate 1 and a transparent supporting substrate 3, and the liquid crystal cell 6 consists of the transparent substrate 1 having a transparent electrode 2, the transparent supporting substrate 3 having a transparent electrode 4, and the liquid crystal material 5. Solar batteries 7 consisting of single crystal silicon solar batteries are stuck to the outside peripheral part of the liquid crystal cell 6 for the purpose of avoiding light interception due to opaqueness. A transducer 8 and a controller 9 are arranged near end faces of the liquid crystal cell 6 and solar batteries 7 joined with this cell integrally. Thus, the liquid crystal device is made compact.
