Process for the preparation of silica having a high specific surface area. Comprises: treating a sepiolite with a purity of more than 80% and a particle size of less than 500 micrometers with an aqueous solution of 0.5-12N sulphuric acid at a temperature of between 25 and 100 degree C for a time of between 15 minutes and 6 hours, then filtering off the silica obtained, washing it and drying it at approximately 110 degree C. The silica so obtained is useful as a support for nickel hydrogenation catalysts.
