Floating oil is recovered from water using a floating, flexible blanket whose upper and/or lower surface is provided with an array of shallow cells 41 each communicating with one of a series of ducts 37 extending lengthwise of the blanket and supplied with compressed air via line 18 and manifold 20 at the rear of the blanket. The air flow through ducts 37 creates suction at openings 38 to draw collected oil into a tank 50 at the forward end, from which pump 22 conveys it to a towing vessel (Fig.1). Manifold 20 and extensions thereof on each side of the blanket may incorporate remote-controlled jets (28, 30) for steering the blanket. The blanket is of two plies of, possibly foam, plastic and able to follow wave movements. A plurality of blankets may be used, end to end. <IMAGE>
