[Class 142 (iv)] The apparatus described in Specification 571,444 is provided with a plurality of jaws 53, mounted on a rotating drum or frame, for receiving and depositing the pile material 82. The pile 82 is fed to a severing table 89 and is cut by a knife 95. An arm 90, operated by a cam 91, clamps the pile and moves the pile forward. The jaws grasp the pile and transfer the severed portion to a vertical position where the pile is embedded in an adhesive backing strip 69. The backing strip is drawn forward by a carding wheel and then passes to a vulcanizing oven. Arms 52, carrying the jaws 53, are moved by a roller 50 thereon engaging a cam track 49 fixed to the drum. The cam track moves the arms to their outermost position when the jaws are opposite the severing position, and also moves the jaws downwards to embed the pile in the backing strip. A device for closing the jaws at the pile severing position comprises a roller 74, mounted on an arm 73 attached to the knife holder and which presses on another roller 75 to cause an arm 77 to rotate a disc 70. A notch 71 in the disc provides initial free movement, and contact of the lower side of the notch with a pin 72 causes the mechanism to operate instantaneously. The jaws are opened at the lowest position by a cam 66 which presses on a ledge 65 and pivots a lever 62 about its support 63. The nose 64 of this lever turns the disc 70 and trips the pin 72 which opens the jaws. A lever 45 pivoted at 54 and rocked by a cam on a shaft 58 engages notches 44 in a disc on one end of the drum and thereby positions the drum. Another lever, similarly operated, engages further notches in the disc and locks the drum when one of the pairs of jaws is at the pile severing station.</p> |
