PURPOSE: A methods for verifying a version and switching a reproduction of a video compact disk is provided to minimize a detecting error of version information of a video CD to be reproduced. CONSTITUTION: Information of a video CD is read in a pickup unit and stored in a memory. A micro computer reads version information of a video CD to be reproduced firstly from an INFO.VCD out of the information stored in the memory(S111). The micro computer confirms whether the version information is 1.1 or 2.0(S120). If the version information is 2.0, the micro computer does not set an initial value for the version 2.0, and confirms whether a reproduction order information(PSD, VCD) included only the version 2.0 is existed in a track 1 of the video CD(S130). If the reproduction order information(PSD, VCD) is existed, the micro computer perceives as a video CD of the version 2.0 and sets an initial value of variables needed for reproducing thereof(S131). It is conformed whether a high sound quality data track is existed in TOC information read previously(S140). If a high sound quality data track is existed, the first track position is stored in the memory. If a user inputs a key for performing a reproduction(S142), the video CD is reproduced(S143). The micro computer decides whether the current track position is corresponded to the position of the high sound quality data track stored in the memory(S144). Although the current track position is corresponded to the position of the high sound quality data track, the mode is not switched into a high sound quality reproducing mode. Also, it is confirmed whether the sixth bit of a sub-Q data of a reproducing track is '0'(S150). If the sixth bit is '0', the high sound quality data are signal-processed and outputted.
