PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which realizes reduction of the number of parts of an operation mechanism, simplification of a structure, miniaturization and simplification of a drive power transmission system, etc., with respect to a differential mechanism which uses a wire and a pulley to move a second running body at the half speed of a first running body. SOLUTION: In the image reader provided with a light source which irradiates a document surface, a first running body 15 which supports optical parts to transmit the reflected light from the document surface in a prescribed direction and is moved, and a second running body 16 which supports optical parts and is moved at a half speed of the first running body, the differential mechanism to move the second running body at a half speed is provided for the second running body.
