PURPOSE: An apparatus for reducing howling of a flat cathode ray tube is provided which reinforces the strength of a shadow mask to minimize the vibration of the shadow mask, thereby preventing howling phenomenon. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for reducing howling of a flat cathode ray tube includes a shadow mask set between a fluorescent substance and an electron gun, and a patch(23) coming into contact with a shadow mask(3) in the horizontal direction to reinforce the strength of the shadow mask. The patch comes into contact with the shadow mask along the longer side of the shadow mask. The patch is formed of a material having a thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of the shadow mask and Young's modulus higher than that of the shadow mask. The patch is formed of the same material as that of the shadow mask.
