PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling the molecular weights of a lubricant whose terminal functional groups are substituted at a high substitution ratio and a lubricant which is small in the scattering amount, is excellent in sliding reliability and is used for magnetic disks and magnetic disk apparatuses and the like, and to provide an apparatus for controlling the molecular weight of a lubricant. SOLUTION: In this method for controlling molecular weight of lubricant, an ultrafiltration membrane with which a polymer having a given molecular weight can be franctionated is subjected to a hydrophilic treatment by which the permeation of a hydrophobic material becomes possible, and a solution obtained by dissolving a lubricant in a fluorine-containing solvent at a given concentration is permeated through the ultrafiltration membrane having been subjected to the above hydrophilic treatment for allowing the permeation of a hydrophobic material, to thereby control the molecular weight of the lubricant.
