PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lens position detection method for detecting the position of a zoom lens without using a detector. SOLUTION: The focusing range width of an optical system is detected by moving a focus lens whose position is predetected to its focusing position in accordance with an optional subject and also moving it in one direction and an opposite direction along the optical axis direction with the focusing position as center, while the position of the zoom lens is detected based on the focusing range width with a distance to the subject detected based on the focusing position of the focus lens as a parameter.
