Fluorescent dyes useful for preparing fluorescent metal ion indicators, the fluorescent indicators themselves, and the use of the fluorescent indicators for the detection, discrimination and quantification of metal cations are provided.

A is acetyl or acetoxymethyl; R1, R2, R5 and R6 are chloro; R3, R4 and R7-R12 are independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, carboxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, thiol, arylthiol, azido, nitro, nitroso, cyano, amino, hydroxy, phosphonyl, sulfonyl, carbonyl, boronic acid, aryl, heteroaryl and alkyl or alkoxy that is itself optionally substituted one or more times by halogen, amino, hydroxy, phosphonyl, sulfonyl, carbonyl, boronic acid, aryl or heteroaryl; R20 and R21 are independently selected from alkyl, carboxyalkyl, aryl, heteroaryl and alkyl or alkoxy that is itself optionally substituted one or more times by halogen, amino, hydroxy, phosphonyl, sulfonyl, carbonyl, boronic acid, aryl or heteroaryl; and Z is an acyloxymethyl having 3-10 carbons.
