Electronic system for the protection and control of license transactions associated with the disablement of replicated read only media and its bound licensed content

Distribution of content stored on read only media, and a system and method by which a consumer who purchased content stored on read only media implements a process in the field by which they alter the storage media and verifiably disable at least a portion of the stored content in support of a transaction. A system and tools are used by the consumer to identify, authenticate, disable, and confirm disablement in exchange for compensation, the acquisition of new usage rights to content, or the ability to restore access to or copy content to new media. The process may be conducted by the consumer in the field without assistance and or visual inspection, or be partially conducted in conjunction with an authorized intermediary. Furthermore, the process may restore access to content stored on new media without the need to transfer copies of content.

1. A method for supporting a transaction associated with content stored on replicated, read only, optical media comprising
using an optical disc drive connected to a computer system under software control, electronically identifying content stored on an original industry-standard replicated read only non-rewritable physical optical storage medium; electronically determining if an owner or authorized intermediary of identified content has authorized the identified content for a transaction; using the optical disc drive connected to the computer system under software control, electronically inspecting the physical medium to confirm the medium is an original replicated read only medium and not a copy; electronically retrieving at least one policy governing the transaction; if required by the retrieved at least one policy, placing medium alterations into specific locations of the original physical medium that disable content stored on the original physical medium thereby irreversibly obliterating at least part of a data portion of the original physical medium; using the same or different optical disc drive connected to the same or different computerized system under software control, automatically, electronically verifying that at least a portion of the content has been disabled on the original physical medium and confirming the disabled content is associated with the original physical medium; and based on electronic verification that at least a portion of the content stored on the original physical medium has been disabled, electronically engaging in the transaction associated with the identified content stored on the original, physical, optical storage medium.
