A process for tanning leather comprises using for this purpose compounds of the general formula I I where m is 0 or 1, and the radicals R are independently of each other C1-C18-alkyl, which may be substituted by hydroxyl or carboxyl and/or interrupted by oxygen atoms, or else one of the radicals R is a radical of the formula where R1 is alkylene, which may be substituted by hydroxyl and/or interrupted by oxygen atoms.
