PURPOSE:To obtain a polyalkyl-2-alkoxy-7-hydroxychroman useful as a synthetic intermediate of an agrichemical in high yield by mutually reacting resorcin, an aliphatic ketone and an aliphatic alcohol and further reacting the reaction product with an aliphatic alcohol. CONSTITUTION:Resorcin, an aliphatic ketone of the formula R<1>COCH2R<2> (R<1> is primary alkyl; R<2> is H or primary alkyl) and an aliphatic alcohol of the formula R<3>OH (R<3> is lower alkyl) are mutually reacted in the presence of an acid catalyst (e.g. Amberlist 16) at 25-160 deg.C. A compound of formula is obtained by reacting the obtained polymer having more than two of the total of chromene or chroman structure or a crude product containing this polymer with an aliphatic alcohol in the presence of an aid catalyst at 25-160 deg.C. The polymer, which is a reaction by-product is effectively used and converted to the objective product and thereby the improvement of the yield is attained. |
