PURPOSE: To make possible quantitative evaluation of a burning phenomenon as caused by prolonged high temperature electric energization by determining a difference between two values of opposed electrode voltages that minimize the degree of l intensity modulation at a drive frequency based on a plurality of specified formulas. Transmission light or reflected light F(t) is defined by the formulas I and II (wherein L represents average luminance of F(t), angular velocity, F(t)max maximum of F(t), F(t)min minimum of F(t) and m degree of intensity modulation indicating the degree of flicker). When a value of Vcom is given Vc 1 at which the degree of intensity modulation mf at a drive frequency (f) becomes minimal with the changing of the center voltage Vcom of the electrode on a second substrate in the direction of increasing and when the value of the Vcom is given Vc 2 at which the mf becomes minimal with the changing of the center voltage Vcom in the direction of decreasing, quantitative evaluation of a burning phenomenon or the like is possible by Vc =|Vc 1-Vc 2|.
