PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical material high in a nonlinear optical constant, free from light absorption in a visible light region, applicable to electrooptical devices, light-to-light devices and the like and usable to optical communication, optical computers and the like by constituting the optical material made of a compound having a specified iodonium salt structure. SOLUTION: This organic nonlinear optical material is made of a compound having an iodonium salt structure represented by formula in whichπ1 -πn is the same or different each other, an atomic group havingπelectrons; each of I1 to In-1 is an iodonium cation; each of A1 to An-1 is the counter anion of an iodonium cation; each of R<1> and R<2> is an H atom or an electron donor group; and (n) is an integer of 2, 3, or 4. That is, since the compound represented by the formula having the iodonium salt structure has a high nonlinear optical constant in a nonresonanr state and the material itself has a high light transmittance in a visible light region, an optical material low in loss and high in efficiency can be easily obtained.
