PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound inexpensively and in high yield by culturing a fungus capable of producing dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid in a medium containing a specific compound and collecting. CONSTITUTION:0.01-10g (preferably 0.1-2g) based on 1l medium of a compound shown by the formula (R<1> is lower alkyl; R<2> is hydroxyl group, alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl or oxyalkyl; (n) is 0-5) is blended with fats and oils, added to a liquid medium before culture, a fungus (e.g. fungus belonging to the genus Conidiobolus, capable of producing dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid is subjected to aerated spinner culture at 10-40 deg.C for 1-20 days, cells are separated and the objective compound is collected from the cells by solvent extraction. When an inhibitor of unsaturation reaction of -5 position comprising the compound shown by the formula as a main compound is used, a fatty acid is added to the fungus and animal cells, then 0.1-100mg/g compound shown by the formula based on dried cell is added and conversion from dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid in the fungus cells to arachidonic acid is suppressed. |
