PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep a printing surface clean while a line applying action is reduced to the minimum necessary extent by a method wherein a line roller is so supported as to be reciprocally movable between an action point where the roller is in contact with a slip and a waiting point where the roller is spaced away from the slip while the roller is reciprocally moved by a drive source and the action is controlled timely. SOLUTION: In the envelope sealing device, a line applying mechanism 50 provided with a line roller 51 for applying a line onto a slip S to be fed to a folding machine is disposed at the inlet of the folding machine. And a roller holding means 52 supports the line roller 51 to reciprocally move it between an action point where the roller is in contact with the slip S and a waiting point where the roller is spaced away from the slip S. A roller drive means 53 has a drive source to impart a moving force to the holding means 52 so that the roller 51 is moved back and forth. A roller movement control means controls so as to timely actuate the drive source of the means 53. Thus, the line applying action is timely effected to the minimum necessary extent by a simple structure and further a line applying operation can be performed easily and precisely.
