The invention concerns a device comprising a sheet (10) having a rough surface (10A), means (14, 16) for maintaining said sheet opposite the surface to be ground (12A) of the workpiece (12) and spaced apart from said surface. At least a pressing member (20) arranged on the rear surface side (10B) of the sheet (10) so as to contact locally said sheet (10) with the workpiece (12) and means for displacing the pressing member relative to the workpiece so as to exert said local contact in different zones of the workpiece. The invention also concerns a method which consists in exerting pressures on the rear surface (10B) of the sheet (10) so as to locally contact the sheet with the workpiece in different zones thereof.
