Mixture-forming systems in multi cylinder internal combustion engines are known, in which only one lambda probe is arranged in the flow of hot exhaust gas. This provides only the mean value for the exhaust gas flows of all cylinders. With the method according to the invention it is possible to adhere strictly to lambda = 1 at each operating point, the following steps being provided for this purpose: the lambda probe signal is divided up into time segments which are assigned to each cylinder as a function of the firing order and the assigned lambda probe signal is then processed into a correction signal which is applied to a throttle element adjuster or to the fuel injection valve or valves according to the intake order of the cylinders. The efficiency of the catalytic exhaust emission control can thereby be increased and the internal combustion engine operated in a road vehicle.
