PURPOSE:To readily recover produced sulfur at a high recovery ratio by reacting a hydrogen sulfide-containing gas with an aqueous solution of an iron salt containing trivalent iron ions at a temperature above the melting point of the sulfur, then treating molten sulfur droplets dispersed in a liquid with a coalescing means and subsequently separating the sulfur. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution of an iron salt (e.g. aqueous solution of ferric chloride) containing trivalent iron ions is fed to an absorption column 1 and heated at a temperature above the melting point of the sulfur. A hydrogen sulfide-containing gas (e.g. H2S) is then introduced and reacted therewith. The produced sulfur, together with the aqueous solution of the iron salt, is subsequently introduced into a sulfur coalescing step 2 (e.g. a fiber packed layer) to coalesce the molten droplets dispersed in the liquid in the process for passing through the step 2. Thereby, the sulfur is grown into relatively large drops, which are then fed to a sulfur separating step 3 and the sulfur in the molten state is settled in the aqueous solution of the iron salt by a difference in specific gravity and recovered from the bottom. The aqueous solution of the iron salt is subsequently fed to a regeneration step 4 to electrolytically oxidize the bivalent iron ions into the trivalent iron ions. The resultant aqueous solution is circulated to the absorption column 1 for use.
|
