PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject aqueous solution having good compatibility between starch and polyvinyl alcohol, excellent in workability without causing phase separation of the mixed solution of the starch with polyvinyl alcohol or increase of viscosity with the passage of time by including a starch and a modified polyvinyl alcohol at a specific ratio. SOLUTION: This aqueous solution of polymer contains (A) starch and (B) a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing 1-20 mol.% <=3Cα-olefin unit at (99:1) to (10:90) weight ratio of the components A and B and in 1-50 wt.% concentration of total amount of the components A and B. Furthermore, the component B is preferably obtained by saponifying, e.g. a copolymer of a vinyl ester such as vinyl acetate with a <=3Cα-olefin such as ethylene.
