Copolymers derived from a N-vinyllactam or N-vinylamine are used as a matrix to confer controlled release properties to pharmaceutical and dermatological compositions. Pharmaceutical and cosmetic compositions have a matrix containing at least one copolymer from: (a) 50-99 wt.% of N-vinylpyrrolidone, N-vinylpiperidone, N-vinylcaprolactam, N-vinylimidazole (optionally methylated) and/or N-vinylformamide; and (b) 1-50 wt.% of a monoethylenically unsaturated 3-8C carboxylic acid 14-30C alkyl ester, N-(8-30C alkyl) amide or N,N-di(8-30C alkyl) amide, an aliphatic 8-30C carboxylic acid vinyl ester and/or a 8-30C alkyl vinyl ether monomer.
