PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical reading apparatus that allows a code pattern to be formed with ease and high precision and that has a rotating roller of high productivity. SOLUTION: The optical reading apparatus 1 has a hollow, transparent rotating roller 20 rotatably stored in an external frame member 10 and a reading optical part fixedly supported against the external frame member 10 and stored in the rotating roller 20. A transparent cylinder member 13 that rotates along with the rotating roller 20 is provided on the inner peripheral surface of the rotating roller 20. The cylinder member 13 has linear grooves 13a arranged periodically on its outer end face and has its inner end face inclined to serve as a reflecting face 13c. A cord light source 34 and a light guide that guides light from the cord light source 34 to the end face of the cylinder member 13 formed with the linear grooves 13a are provided inside the rotating roller 20. The light from the code light source 34 is made to impinge via the light guide on the end face of the cylinder member 13 formed with the linear grooves 13a, is totally reflected by the reflecting face 13c of the reflecting member 13, and is read by the reading optical part.
