PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device which is excellent in performance and reliability and in which all kinds of optical disks are controlled with the same CPU or optical disk controller with limited resources. SOLUTION: An optical-disk controller, which controls the recording or reproduction of an optical disk, is employed. The optical-disk controller is provided with; a rewritable memory which stores information necessary for recording to or reproduction from an optical disk; a determination means which determines the kind and type of an optical disk; a searching means which searches an area, to which optical disk-controlling information is recorded, based on the result of a determination made by the determination means; a reproduction means which reproduces the control information which is recorded to the area searched by the searching means; and a memory-controlling means which changes the arrangement of a memory based on at least either the result of the determination or the control information reproduced by the reproduction means.
