摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic dimming method of a lighting system which improves a display definition while saving on power consumption in an electrooptical apparatus. SOLUTION: The electrooptical apparatus is, for example, a liquid crystal display device and has: a liquid crystal display panel; the lighting system illuminating light thereto; and an optical sensor detecting the illumination of the surrounding ambient light. The apparatus has a luminance control means on the outside etc., and the automatic dimming of the lighting system is performed by the means and the optimum surface luminance providing appropriate brightness for the human visual sensation is obtained according to the surrounding environmental light. The electrooptical apparatus also has a display mode change means, and by the means, the display mode is changed to either one of the reflection type display mode and the transmission type display mode according to the magnitude of the illuminance of the surrounding environmental light detected by the optical sensor. The electrooptical apparatus applies a gamma value for the transmission display or a gamma value for the reflection display according to the state of the display mode. As a result, the display luminance of the liquid crystal display panel is adjusted to an appropriate state and consequently, the display definition is improved while saving on the power consumption of the lighting system.
