PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device that reduces consumed power by irradiating only a displayed area with light from a backlight and that equalizes degradation in luminance of backlight elements. SOLUTION: In a radio mode, a microcomputer 12 selects an OSD (on-screen display) image from a memory 19. The microcomputer 12 determines the number of fluorescent tubes required for lighting the OSD image. The microcomputer 12 reads out the priority degree of backlight lighting from the memory 19 and selects fluorescent tubes of the backlight with higher priority. The microcomputer 12 reads out position data of an irradiation range from the memory 19 and determines a display position of the OSD image so as to display the OSD image within the range. The microcomputer 12 commands a light source driving section 13 to light fluorescent tubes, sends the OSD image data and the display position data to an OSD processing unit 8 to generate OSC image signals, and makes a liquid crystal display panel 9 display the image through a liquid crystal controller 6 and a liquid crystal driver 7.
