PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detection method for shortening focus detection time when making focus detection in a single detection area or the detection area of a narrow range by surely allowing focusing to the object of the shortest distance when making the focus detection in a plurality of detection areas or the detection area of a wide range, and also to provide a focus detection device thereof. SOLUTION: The focus detection method comprises: carrying out search a near end to an infinite far end direction when detecting a focusing state in a plurality of focus detection areas; making a focusing position of a lens position when the detected focusing state is obtained by stopping search when detecting the focusing state at first; moving focusing lens groups up to the near end near from a stop position of the current focusing lens groups or the infinite far end when detecting the focusing state in the single focus detection area; starting the search from the near end or the infinite far end to another end direction; making the focusing position of the lens position when the focusing state is obtained by stopping the search when detecting the focusing state at first.
