PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document feeder capable of more surely detecting whether documents are placed on a tray or not. SOLUTION: This automatic document feeder 1 comprises a tray 10, a support shaft 20 extended in parallel with a loading surface 11, crossing the document conveying direction F, on the tray 10 and to be rotated so as to convey documents, a holder 30 provided in the support shaft 20 freely to swing, a paper feeding roller 40 rotatably provided in the holder 30 on the upstream side in the conveying direction F so as to be driven by the support shaft 20, a separating roller 50 provided in the holder 30 on the downstream side in the conveying direction F freely to be integrally rotated with the support shaft 20, and a detecting means 60 projecting upward from the tray 10 and having an actuator 70 to be displaced by abutting on the documents on the loading surface 11 so as to detect the document on the tray 10. One side and the other side of the holder 30 respectively crossing the conveying direction F are provided with a first and a second abutting parts 31 and 32, and the actuator 70 is positioned between the first and the second abutting parts 31 and 32.
