Systems and methods for hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis having integrated electrodialysis and electrodeionization capabilities are provided. In an embodiment, the dialysis system includes a carbon source, a urease source, an ED/EDI unit. The carbon source, urease source, and/or the ED/EDI unit can be in the form of removable cartridges.

1. A method of performing hemodialysis comprising:
passing dialysis fluid from a dialyzer through, in any order, a carbon source, a urease source, and a combination unit comprising an electrodialysis (“ED”) component and an electrodeionization (“EDI”) component to produce a cleaned dialysis fluid, wherein the ED component and the EDI component are separate, and wherein the dialysis fluid is passed within the combination unit via a fluid path from the ED component to the separate EDI component; and returning the cleaned dialysis fluid to the dialyzer.
