SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PROVIDING DIRECT ACCESS TO A SHARDED DATABASE

In accordance with an embodiment, described herein are systems and methods for providing direct access to a sharded database. A shard director provides access by software client applications to database shards. A connection pool (e.g., a Universal Connection Pool, UCP) and database driver (e.g., a Java Database Connectivity, JDBC, component) can be configured to allow a client application to provide a shard key, either during connection checkout or at a later time; recognize shard keys specified by the client application; and enable connection by the client application to a particular shard or chunk. The approach enables efficient re-use of connection resources, and faster access to appropriate shards.

1. A system for providing access to a sharded database, comprising:
a computer, including a processor; an application server or database environment which provides access to a database having a plurality of shards by which data is stored and presented, and wherein the database is associated with
a database driver, anda connection pool which creates and maintains a pool of connections for use with the database,wherein the connection pool and database driver operate together to provide access by client applications to data stored at the database, using the connections; wherein the connection pool and database driver are configured to enable a client application to provide a shard key information during at least one of a checkout of a connection to the database, or at a later point in time; and wherein the shard key information is then used by the system to provide access by the client application to an appropriate shard of the database, for use by the client application.
