PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily obtain ethyl glyoxylate in high productivity and also in high selectivity and yield. SOLUTION: The objective ethyl glyoxylate is obtained by the three steps (1) diethyl fumarate and/or diethyl maleate is oxidized with ozone in an ester solvent to produce an ozonide-contg. reaction mixture; (2) the reaction mixture is held by selecting both temperature and time so as to satisfy the relationship: 100×e<-0.03> T<=τ<=1500×e<-0.02> T (T is the temperature( deg.C) of the reaction mixture;τis the time (min) to hold the reaction mixture at T( deg.C)), and (3) the reaction mixture is subjected to hydrogenating reduction.
