PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cosmetic having both a twinkling glow and a flip-flop property without deteriorating adhesiveness to skins, capable of exhibiting excellent designs and useful for eye shadows by including mica having specific sizes and coated with a metal oxide, etc. SOLUTION: This cosmetic contains a mica-based composite material in an amount of >=0.5 wt.% based on the whole amount of the cosmetic. The mica-based composite material is obtained by coating the surfaces of (A) large diameter thin mica pieces having plate diameters of 0.1-2 mm and thickness of 0.2-2μm with (B) one or more kinds of oxides and/or hydroxides of metals such as titanium, iron and zinc in an amount of 0.1-50 wt.% based on the component A, and preferably further calcining the coated product at 500-1100 deg.C. The large diameter thin mica pieces A are obtained by wet-grinding synthetic mica, etc., sieving the ground product, drying the sieved product and subsequently loosing the dried product. A method for coating the component A with the component B comprises e.g. adding an aqueous titanyl sulfate solution to the dispersion of the component A in ion-exchanged water, boiling the mixture for 3 hr making the dispersion stand to cool, filtering the cooled dispersion, washing with water, drying and subsequently calcining the dried product. Thus, the component B is coated with anatase type titanium dioxide.
