A safety system for a car has a safety belt device (7) to support the shoulders of a passenger, an air bag device (2) which has an air bag body (11) that is inflated by gas which is introduced into the body in order to accommodate the passenger, two outlet openings (18,19) for expulsion of the gas and a sealing member (20,55) which is located on the second outlet opening. The sealing member is displaced into either a first state in which an expulsion of the gas from the second outlet opening is prevented, or a second state in which an expulsion of the gas is made possible. The sealing member is normally displaced into the first state and to a control device (13) for controlling the sealing member. The safety belt device outputs a signal indicating the donned safety belt when the safety belt device is donned on the passenger. The control device displaces the sealing member into the second sate when the control device receives the signal.
