The optical system has an X-ray/neutron source (1), providing a primary beam (2) directed onto a sample (4) and an X-ray/neutron detector (6), for detecting the diffracted or scattered radiation, all of which lie along a common axis (Z). A beam stop (5), with a cross-section perpendicular to the common axis matched to that of the primary beam, lies between the sample and the detector and is moved along the common axis for adjusting the ratio between the useful radiation received by the detector and the inteference radiation.
