PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To timely update, without leaving the timing of update to a user, map data of an area more necessary for a user in a device utilizing map data. SOLUTION: When the current location of an own vehicle is updated (S210:YES), the version information (1) of map data of an area including the updated current location is read out (S220). Then, a version list obtained beforehand is referred to and the version information (2) of the map data for update corresponding to the area is read out (S230). When the versions are different (S240:YES) between (1) and (2), a picture for asking the user whether the update is permitted is displayed on a display device. When the update is permitted (S260:YES) by the user, the map data for update is obtained (S270) from an information distribution center, and the map data of the area to be updated is updated (S280) in accordance with this map data for update.
