[Class 20 (iv)] A column which with associated beams and girders 14, 16, 18 forms the framework of a building is built up from a series of pairs of U-shaped reinforced concrete elements 10, 20, Fig. 2, assembled with their webs parallel and the flanges of one extending towards those of the. other to form a hollow space into which concrete is subsequently cast. The reinforcements 32, 36 embedded in the elements and projecting from the flanges are caused to encircle longitudinal reinforcing rods 34, 40 inserted in the filling concrete 44. Each element may be of storey height and the front members of each pair may be staggered with respect to the rear members. In the form shown in Fig. 4, which is particularly for internal columns an additional I-section reinforced element 48 is positioned between the U-shaped elements. |
